Car theft is always a risk. No matter where you live or where you go, the degree of risk may change but risk will always be present. There are many ways to minimize your risk. With numerous products and offerings for your car, it's really down to choosing what best fits your situation. However, if you are not ready to spend more at the moment, is there something you can do to help protect your car? This is by no means advocating that you should not invest in security systems for your car. However, not buying them does not mean you can't do anything. Here are some tips for you.
Mind your parking
Always avoid leaving your car in risky areas. You should have a fairly rough idea of which places are more dangerous than others. Avoid leaving your cars in known places with high crime rates. You can always choose smarter parking even in common places like the mall or grocery. Before you go shopping, try to look for a parking which is well lit. Avoid dark areas where it is easy to hide and conceal. If the place you are in has security cameras, make sure your car is in good view of it.
Did I lock my car?
This is a question I always ask myself once I am 10 feet away from my car. For some reason, I always doubt myself if I did lock the car. Make it a habit to check your doors after locking it. Before leaving your car, make sure all windows are closed. Do the same for the trunk, hood, and gas tank. Any opening, no matter how small is a possible point of entry.
Never leave your items exposed
If you will leave anything in the car, be it a bag or even a folder, make sure it is hidden from plain sight. Never tempt would be thieves by exposing items which can be easy to steal. For me, the trunk is the best place to keep all items as it is hidden from view. Avoid leaving valuables inside your car, especially if you are parked outside or in public.
Make use of existing security systems
You may not know it, but your car may already have security systems in place that you are not using. This is one of the reasons why you should always read through the owner's manual.
