Money is spent everyday. How much is spent though, is dependent on you. Although we can not escape financial responsibilities, we are able to minimize some of our expenditures. How can you spend less? One way is to get more value with every dollar you spend. Being frugal may not be as hard as you think. Here are simple ways you can save a dollar or two.
Skip on the brands
If I gave you a blind test for some grocery items, would you be able to determine the brand? One way to lessen your grocery expenses is by going with the cheaper option. Why spend on a more expensive brand if a generic label tastes the same. This may not be true for every item, but for most groceries you can easily substitute the generic label.
Invest in expensive items if it’s worth it
Here are 2 scenarios. At the end, you decide what will come out cheaper. First, you buy a certain brand of detergent that is more expensive than average. However, for each use, you only use a fraction as compared to other brands. So a $20 bag can last you month, for example. In scenario 2, you buy a $7 bag of detergent which is the same weight as the former. However, it only lasts a week as you need to use more to clean the same. Don't you think the first scenario is a better choice?
Plan your meals throughout the week
Instead of buying a range of ingredients and deciding what to cook from them, try doing the opposite. List the dishes you want to eat, and buy ingredients based on that. You will notice you can drastically reduce your waste. For an average family, as much as 50% of items bought will not be used and thrown away. Better planning is needed to avoid this.
Save on coupons
Take advantage of special deals and offerings. Some coupons offer some real major savings. Just be careful and not fall into the trap of buying items you do not need. You might feel compelled to buy items because they are very cheap. But if you do not have any use for it then don't. Do not justify a purchase because it is cheap alone. You have to need it or really want it.
